Can some one help me out? I would like a few pointers wouldn't mind giving brewing a shot, but not really sure where to start. Should i buy an all in one sort of kit like they sell at Big W or would that be overkill? What is something simple to brew first up?

The kits you mentioned from Big W are probably a good way to go they cost around $60 and contain most things to get you started. Although throw the plastic bottles that come in the kit, find a proper bottle capper and use normal glass longnecks.
As for your first brew try a coopers can they aren't the most tasty brews but they are easy to find (Coles and Woolworths) and are very hard to mess up. The yeast that comes with them is almost indestructable!!
